Door Systems donates $5,000 to Lee’s Summit West High School Challenge Day

Door Systems of Lee’s Summit recently donated $5,000 to Challenge Day at Lee’s Summit West High School, an interactive program encouraging acceptance and respect. Held April 2, Challenge Day embraces the school district’s vision of reflecting a culture of respect and acceptance.

This is the fourth year for Challenge Day at LSWHS. Through collaboration and a commitment to fostering social inclusion, students are involved in a variety of trust building activities to gain a fresh perspective on an ever-changing and diverse student body.

Layana Sariah, who has participated in Challenge Day all four years, said, “During Challenge Day I have learned that you are never alone in the situations that you go through. It has also taught me to not judge people from what I see on the outside. People who seem to have it all together or have the perfect life have their own issues, too.”

Door Systems officials said they are fully on board with the goals of LSWHS students to continue academic excellence and extracurricular involvement by being leaders of cultural change through unity and working together.

According to the program’s goals, Challenge Day provides teens and adults with tools to tear down walls of separation and inspires them to live, study and work in an encouraging environment of acceptance, love and respect. Using highly interactive and energetic activities, leaders guide participants through a carefully designed exploration of the ways people separate from each other, and model tools for creating connection and building community. Challenge Day allows students to get to know their fellow classmates better through simulations, games and small group discussions. It empowers students to be advocates of change within their school building and teaches them empathy, compassion and perspective.

After attending Challenge Day for four years, Mathilda Darkwah, a LSW senior, said, “I encourage more high schools to commit to Challenge Day to show students that we all are the same and that all these labels and ideals perpetuated by society only serve as a gap between all of us. Challenge Day encourages us to cross that gap, and I strive to cross it everyday.”

Tina Walcutt and John Payne of Door Systems are seen below presenting a check to Jennifer Bailey, LSWHS Challenge Day coordinator, and Dr. Chad Hertzog, LSWHS principal.
