LSHS student works with city to install solar panels

Lee’s Summit High School graduate (2018) Zachary Burton started inquiring about solar energy opportunities as a sophomore in 2016. He worked with city architects, city council members, and local business to transform a promising idea into a sustainable reality. This week, Zach, the City of Lee’s Summit and MC Power celebrated the installation of ground-based solar panels at the Lee’s Summit Animal Control Facility, which will save the City of Lee’s Summit more than $130,000 over the next 25 years.

Zach is currently a Missouri Innovation Campus web design development intern and student. He plans to graduate with his B.S. of Computer Science in software development in May 2020. As a recent graduate, he already holds his Associate’s degree.

“I’ve always been environmentally friendly,” Zach said. “When I was in elementary school, I was very passionate about recycling. Once I entered middle school, I would go around and pick up trash in the street. I officially saw myself as an environmental activist when I entered high school.”
